IPL Pune team brings new hope among young players in Pune

As  Sahara has bagged the IPL Pune team franchise, there is hope among young players in Pune. Among the frontrunners is 19-year-old Rohit Motwani, the first from Pimpri-Chinchwad to have made it to the Maharashtra Ranji.

Rohit, the stand-in captain who recently led the team to a 20/20 tournament win in Indore, is at present not on the field, practising, as one would have imagined. The commerce undergraduate is instead burning the midnight oil for final exams starting Tuesday.

“The first paper is English. I will try to do my best. I want to do well in exams as well,” says the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) student.

Rohit is just back from Indore where he was elevated to skipper after captain Harshad Khadiwale was called for duty by the Kolkata Knight Riders. Rohit led the team in three matches, quarters, semis and the final. The team beat Hyderabad in the final. What was unusual was that Rohit was not even vice-captain when handed over the reins of the team.

Riaz Bagwan, selection committee member of Maharashtra Cricket Association, said Rohit was given the responsibility as “we considered him captain material. Rohit had successfully captained the under-15, under-17 and under-19 teams. He had the experience and capability of leading a side. Like Rohit, there are three-four others in Maharashtra team who would make it to Pune’s IPL team.”

Rohit’s family is sure he will make it to IPL. Minutes after the Pune IPL team was announced, Rohit’s mother told him: “Go out and practise…I want to see you in the Pune team.”

A left-arm batsman, Rohit’s highest score is 173 in an under-17 tournament. “My strike rate in 20/20 matches was more than 100…but it will be tough making it to IPL,” he says.

Rohit’s father, Heero Motwani, a prominent businessman from Pimpri, advises his son to adopt a batting style that Australia’s Michael Bevan had. “Just hold on to yourself. Don’t rush. Get your eye in. Take singles initially. Then go for the big shot,” he says, as Rohit nods.

Raju Kotwal, his first coach says, “Rohit is a tenacious player. He doesn’t throw away his wicket. That will stand him in good stead.” Rohit says after the exams, his first target will be the Maharashtra Premier League. “My performance there will be very important for my entry into IPL,” he says.
